Woods had been an assistant to Virginia Tech coach Dennis Wolff since 2013 and recently helped sign the Hokies most recent recruiting class ranked No. 20 by ESPN HoopGurlz. He previously coached at Maury High where he led the Commodores to the regional final in back-to-back season.
"I am beyond excited," Barefoot said.
The former Christopher Newport University standout graduated from Norfolk State in 2011.
Woods replaces Richard Fortune, who left ODU earlier this month to be an assistant at VCU.
The Hokies announced the hiring of assistant coach Heather Vulin on Thursday. Vulin had been an assistant at Villanova.
