Three days until Stanford.
And knock on wood, Old Dominion is actually healthy (Pst. Jess and Jo, too.) Nobody is on the bench with a knee propped up and when was the last time you could say that about the Lady Monarchs?
Jessica Canady promised she'd play against Shaw on Tuesday, and she delivered with 15 points and five rebounds in 21 efficient minutes. Vicki Collier, braces riding up both legs, added four points and four rebounds in 20 minutes. Jo Guilford only played for four minutes, but scored back-to-back baskets along with an assist.
Remember Guilford? She tore her ACL 15 minutes into last year’s initial practice and played a total of 33 minutes in five games before shutting it down for the year. Swelling in her knee hindered her in ODU’s early practices this season, but she is pain free these days.
“Just to get on the floor and play feels great,” Guilford said. “I've got to get into game mode, but it’s coming back.”
Other highlights from ODU’s 85-52 victory over Shaw:
*The Lady Monarchs committed 24 turnovers with 12 assists in their first exhibition against Chowan. Against Shaw: 25 assists, 15 turnovers.
*ODU shot 39 percent against Chowan. Against Shaw: 51 percent. *
Shadasia Green has scored 16 points in each exhibition and has been fearless in attacking the rim.
*Fastbreak points: ODU 18, Shaw 0.
Stanford leaves Palo Alto on Wednesday en route to its two-game swing in the east (the Cardinal plays at Rutgers on Sunday.) ODU is first on Friday night. Tickets are $5, and coach Wendy Larry is hoping for a sellout. Pack the house. Wear your blue.
