Tuesday was a light night on the hardwood. In fact, the most interesting thing came from the mouth of ODU coach Wendy Larry, who during her radio show outed Drexel's Gabriela Marginean as one of the great "floppers" in college basketball. Larry said a review of Sunday's Drexel-JMU first half showed several Marginean dives, with at least three coming without any contact with an opposing player. The only good news, Larry said, is that the game featured a crack officiating crew that didn't reward Marginean with foul calls.
What makes this particularly juicy is that Marginean and Drexel will visit ODU on Sunday. We suspect Larry will plant the seed about Marginean's exploits to Sunday's refs. And as the game wears on, it will be interesting to see how often Marginean tries this tactic and whether or not these officials buy it.
Now back to the action....
Tuesday's recap
Liberty 51, North Carolina A&T 51: Not sure why yet, but Tweet Cook, the Lady Aggies' best player and the reigning MEAC Player of the Week, did not play. (Edit: A&T says she sat out with an unspecified injury). That turned out to be a real break for the Lady Flames as even a Cook-less A&T gave Liberty fits after falling behind by 14 early. Freshmen Devon Brown (17 points) and Jelena Antic (14) led the Liberty offense, and the Lady Flames held yet another foe under 40 percent from the field. But with 23 turnovers and 60-percent free throw shooting, this was hardly the clean, efficient performance we'd hoped the Lady Flames would deliver.
Wednesday's games
Richmond (10-4) at Appalachian St. (6-7), 5 p.m.
In addition to closing out their non-conference schedule in style, the Spiders will look to avenge the crushing 35-31 loss Appalachian State dealt Richmond's football team in the Football Championship Subdivision quarterfinals. The Mountaineers pulled that game out with 10 seconds remaining; the Spiders are hoping for considerably less drama Wednesday night. Richmond 65, Appalachian State 58
Longwood (4-12) at Davidson (6-7), 7 p.m. - Don't be fooled by the Wildcats' record. They own a league-best 5-1 mark in the Southern Conference (yes, SoCon teams have already played that many league games) and are 6-1 since the emergence of 6-4 freshman Sophia Aleksandravicius, who is averaging a double-double over her last seven games. The Lancers will have their hands full. Davidson 75, Longwood 63
