Two former high school players of the year shared the spotlight Tuesday night. Georgetown's Sugar Rodgers, the 2009 Group AAA Player of the Year from Suffolk's King's Fork High, lit up Providence for 26 points in a 74-62 victory. The only people more excited than Hoyas fans were headline writers - when Rodgers scored 20 points and the game-winning basket in a recent 83-81 victory over Syracuse, the Syracuse Post-Standard declared, "Extra Spoonful of Sugar Too Much For Orange Women." Georgetown, in case you haven't noticed is No. 24 nationally after winning 13 straight games.
Meanwhile, in the only game involving Virginia schools, ex-Liberty Christian star Jelena Antic, last year's Virginia Independent Schools Player of the Year, had a career-high 19 points and 10 rebounds as Liberty pounded Longwood 78-55. The performance capped a banner day for the 6-2 Antic, who on Tuesday afternoon was named the Big South Freshman of the Week. She is the second Liberty player to win the award; Devon Brown captured the honor the week of Nov. 24. Brown also had a big day against Longwood with 16 points and 13 rebounds for the Lady Flames (10-4). Longwood fell to 4-14 despite the return of coach Kristin Caruso, who was re-instated Tuesday six days and two games after being placed on a paid leave of absence when the university reviewed undisclosed personnel issues.
