Tolu Omatola blocks a Highlanders shot. |
The wheels are coming off the Highlanders and the Lady Flames? They're rolling. Liberty (17-8) avenged its lone conference loss and has now won eight in a row to improve to 11-1 in the Big South, three games ahead of Radford and Gardner-Webb. Once upon a time Radford (10-14, 7-4) was alone at the top, but the Highlanders have dropped three in a row and in this one, leading scorer D'Naria Erwin Spencer was limited to four points. Nineteen was the magic number for Tolu Omotala (19 points, career high) and Avery Warley (a season-high 19 points along with 15 rebounds).

The road woes continue for the Spartans, who let a winnable game slip away. NSU shot 50 percent from behind the arc and 44 percent from the field. The Eagles missed 12 of their 13 three-point attempts, but shined from the free-throw line, outdoing the Spartans 17-4. NSU also had no answers for Jori Nwachukwu, a 6-foot senior who rang up 28 points along with 13 boards. This is the Eagles fifth win of the season; the Spartans drop to 8-15. The Spartans haven't won since they hosted South Carolina State a month ago, and that's who is on tap on Monday night in Orangeburg, S.C.
