Potentially great news for mid-major programs throughout Virginia and the entire country - the WNIT will increase its field to 64 teams starting with the 2010 postseason.
Imagine, if the 64-team field had been in place a year ago, chances are Old Dominion would have garnered yet another postseason bid, albeit not the one they had in mind. Then again, given the last year's Lady Monarchs limped to the finish, it's not clear that team really wanted to play more basketball.
We call it potentially great news because it remains to be seen whether the WNIT honchos will use those extra bids to reward quality mid-major teams, or if they'll hand them out to mediocre second-division squads from the power conferences as has been the case in the men's NIT. Here's hoping the WNIT folks do the right thing.
