Radford wins season opener; HU, GMU fall

TODAY'S STAR

Kaylyn Crosier, Radford

Kaylyn Crosier started the game with a 3 and kept on going for 13 points and seven rebounds to lead the Highlanders to victory in their season opener.

Notable Nuggets

- Radford wins its first season opener since 1997. We don't mean to brag, but it was Radford 55, Ferrum 38, ... we said Radford 61, Ferrum 44.

-Junior Choicetta McMillan scores 20 off the bench for Pirates.

Monday's games:

Radford 55, Ferrum 38: Highlanders led 35-13 at the break in this rout. In addition to Crosier, Victoria Hamilton chipped in 11.

Fairfield 54, George Mason 37: Fairfield shoots 8-of-11 from 3; Patriots are 0-of-8. If you think that's good, Katelyn Linney nailed 7 of the Stags' 3s en route to 30 points. Any more questions?

South Dakota State 76, Hampton 64: SDSU shoots 24 of 29 from the free-throw line, and Jackrabbits (2-0) advance to play Purdue in Thursday's semifinals of the preseason WNIT. Pirates (1-1) trailed by just two at halftime.

Tuesday's game:

Virginia Union (0-2) at Liberty (0-2), 7 p.m.
Someone gets win No. 1 here, and we like Liberty, even though we're only a few day into the season and it looks like it could be a long one for Liberty. The Flames have scored a combined 81 points in their first two games and have been without Big South Preseason Player of the Year Devon Brown, who is nursing a toe injury. Even if the sophomore sits this one out, the Flames tower over Virginia Union and we doubt they will have much trouble against the Panthers, picked to finish fifth in the CIA By the way, if you didn't read the Old Dominion twist to Virginia Union, check out the post we did earlier today. Liberty 78, Virginia Union 39
