Richmond 73, UMass 54
How's this for balanced Richmond scoring:
12 points - Abby Oliver, Rachael Bilney
11 points - Kristina King
10 points - Sam Bilney, Genevieve Okoro
9 points - Becca Wann
Way to spread it around, guys. What makes this even more noteworthy is the fact that the Spiders (14-3, 2-1 Atlantic 10) shared the ball so well (21 assists on 29 field goals) despite the absence of a true point guard. Neither freshman Keri Soppe or sophomore Amber Nichols played for the third straight game. Soppe is apparently nursing an injury sustained in late December; not sure of the deal on Nichols. King, who had her promising debut season ended by an injury after 12 games last season, got her first start of 2011-12 and dished out four assists in addition to her season-high 11 points. Sam (whose 10 points were also a season high) and Rachael Bilney added 5 assists apiece. The result was the Spiders' seventh straight victory in this series and a win the Spiders frankly were supposed to collect if they plan on making a run at the A-10 title. It gets much tougher from here, though, as on Wednesday Richmond travels to St. Bonaventure (16-2), a team with a Top 25-caliber resume (wins over St. John's, West Virginia, Temple, Marist and Duquesne).
Former Old Dominion guard Carolann Cloutier, who transferred to UMass after her freshman season at ODU, had 8 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists in 35 minutes Saturday against Richmond.
