It's quite a coup for the Hampton to get to host an SEC school, as tonight's visit by Florida marks just the second time a program from that conference has visited the Convocation Center. On Nov. 22, 2008, Alabama won at Hampton 69-60.
The Lady Pirates are 0-6 lifetime against SEC schools. Then again, they went into Tuesday's game at East Carolina 0-5 against those Pirates. And look how that turned out.
Florida (8-2) at Hampton (4-4), 6 p.m.
The Lady Pirates' 69-63 win at East Carolina was the team's third straight, and the second in a row in which they have relied almost exclusively on starters Melanie Warner, Quanneisha Perry, Choicetta McMillian, Laura Lewis and Jericka Jenkins. No member of that quartet played fewer than 33 minutes against either Howard or East Carolina and Jenkins has never left the floor. This obviously isn't ideal, but in the short term as long as these players can stay out of foul trouble they've proven they can handle the heavy workload. The Gators are 5-0 at home - including a 63-55 victory over Old Dominion - and 3-0 in neutral site games. But they're 0-2 in true road games, with the lowlight being Sunday's 56-50 loss at Brown. Two days later, they returned home and whipped Harvard 86-65 in what they called their best overall performance of the year. Florida is prone to fits of poor shooting, but they've been a solid rebounding team and could present problems for the smaller Lady Pirates on the glass. Still, Hampton is 3-0 with wins at James Madison and at ECU when Jenkins is available for an entire game. Until that changes, we're riding with the Lady Pirates. Hampton 67, Florida 62
