William and Mary wins first game of season

TAYSHA PYE
It has been a while since we bragged folks, but hey, we're batting 1,000 on Wednesday. We picked the Tribe 79-60 and lookee how close we came! Now to more important details, those of the game......

William and Mary 74, Norfolk State 59
As tickled as we are to see the Tribe (1-6) get its first win, we also tip our hats to a solid effort from Norfolk State behind 24 points and 7 boards from junior Whitney Long, her second best output as a Spartan. NSU actually led this game 19-9 behind a 19-2 run, but the Spartans (4-3) couldn't contain the trio of Taysha Pye (28 points, 10 rebounds), Kaitlyn Mathieu (13 points, 11 rebounds) and Emily Correal (18 points, 9 rebounds). Unlike a year ago when the Spartans were wiped out on the boards, NSU made up for being outrebounded by 16 in the first half to finish 3 down. The Spartans spent most of the night with Rae Corbo and Batavia Owens battling foul trouble. Corbo (8 point) fouled out in 24 minutes, and Owens (4 points) picked up four personals in 12 minutes. W&M shot a sizzling 56 percent in the second half and held NSU scoreless for a five-minute stretch to seal the deal.
