Richmond's Brown tabbed A-10 Rookie of the Week


The recent improved play of Liz Brown was rewarded Monday when the Atlantic 10 tabbed Richmond's freshman center its Rookie of the Week.

After not recording a single double-double through the Spiders' first 21 games, the 6-4 Brown averaged a double-double in two victories last week. She went for 10 points and Richmond season-high 15 rebounds against Rhode Island before recording 11 points and 9 rebounds against St. Joseph's. Brown also shot 50 percent from the field (9 for 18) in the two games.

Brown started Richmond's first 17 games but has been coming off the bench the past five. The move appears to have paid dividends as Brown has scored at least 10 points in four of those five games. Prior to this stretch, Brown hadn't scored in double figures since a season-high 15-point effort against Boston University on Nov. 18.

"I can't be more proud of Liz," Spiders coach Michael Shafer said. "She has really answered the challenge that we presented. She could have taken herself into a shell, but instead she responded in a positive way. It just goes to show that when you work hard, good things generally happen. This award came at a perfect time for Liz and all of our young players. She has started to show that when she puts her mind to it, she is capable of being an excellent basketball player, not just later in her career, but
