Wendy Larry is at 598 and counting.
If Old Dominion (10-5) wins at Delaware on Sunday, Wendy will have her 599th career victory. No. 600 could come Thursday night at the Constant Center when the Lady Monarchs meet Virginia Commonwealth.
Pretty elite company? Check it out. Among active Division I head coaches, Larry entered the season ranked 13th (and has since moved to 12th) in terms of all-time victories. Among all coaches in all divisions in the history of the game, Larry entered the season ranked 34th. Her current career mark is 598-228.
Every Lady Monarch diehard can document the big Wendy wins (Stanford twice in 1996-7, Tennessee in '97, Purdue in the '97 NCAA tournament to name a few). But we'd love to hear from some Lady Monarch fans who remember the Wendy's victories that tend to get overlooked. Remember at Texas Tech in '98? At Cincinnati on Nov. 27, 1987? (That was Wendy's first victory as head coach of the Lady Monarchs.) George Mason in triple OT? Penn State in OT behind Okeisha Howard's jumper from the left corner?
Got a Wendy memory to share? We'd love to hear from you and we'll share them in a blog post. What a glorious career Larry has had at her alma mater, a ride that has included 17 consecutive CAA tournament titles, Elite Eight in 2002 and of course national runner-up in 1997.
