Liberty's Brown goes off, Longwood goes down

Friday's game

Liberty 75, Longwood 71: Heck of a game. Longwood led 39-38 at halftime, but Liberty's Devon Brown responded by scoring 14 of her season-high 27 points in the opening 5:17 of the second half.  Liberty forged ahead by as many as 10, but the Lancers climbed back in it with 3-pointers - 8 in the second half, 12 for the game - and seized a 71-70 lead on a Crystal Smith trey with 2:13 left. Brown's layup with 1:51 gave Liberty the advantage again, and Chelsea Coward couldn't answer from distance for Longwood. Then came the defining sequence - Liberty's Jelena Antic missed a 3-pointer but got her own rebound. Brown missed a 3-pointer but got her own rebound. Finally, Brown nailed a 3-pointer, with 12 seconds left. Ballgame. For the game the Lady Flames outrebounded the Lancers 40-30 and grabbed 14 offensive boards, including those fateful two caroms in the final minute. Smith finished with 14 points, 14, Krystal Garrison 13, Brittanni Billups 12 and Chelsea Coward 10 for the hard-luck Lancers (3-12), who have lost their last 3 games by 3, 4 and 4 points. Jelena Antic checked in with 16 points and Avery Warley had 13 points and 12 rebounds for the Lady Flames (9-7), who won their fifth straight. As for Brown, she scored 6 points on 2-of-9 shooting in the first half, 21 points on 7-of-9 shooting in the second. Again, heck of a game.
