Hampton cruises in MEAC tourney opener

Hampton 78, South Carolina State 55: Choicetta McMillian nailed 7 of Hampton's 12 3-pointers as the top-seeded and defending champion Lady Pirates (23-6) stormed past the No. 8 Lady Bulldogs in MEAC quarterfinal action at the Joel Coliseum. McMillian, who finished with a game-high 24 points, hit 6 of her 3-pointers in the first half as Hampton seized a 42-25 lead at intermission. Melanie Warner chipped in 15 points, Keira Avant came off the bench to add 12 and Jericka Jenkins notched a double-double with 10 points and 13 assists for Hampton, which never trailed and led by as many as 27.

The Lady Pirates will now be idle until Friday's noon quarterfinals against either No. 4 Florida A&M or No. 5 Coppin State. Those teams will meet in the quarterfinals on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. Hampton went 3-0 versus those two teams during the regular season, winning by 12 on the road and by 39 at home against Florida A&M and by 20 points on the road in their lone game against Coppin State.
