Chelsie Schweers scored 27 points as Christopher Newport downed Lebanon Valley 62-50 Saturday in Annville, Pa. to advance to the Division III Final Four for the first time in program history.
The Lady Captains (29-3) will face Amherst (30-1) in the national semifinals on Friday at 6 p.m. at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Ill. Host Illinois Wesleyan (27-4) and 2010 national champion Washington University (24-5) will meet in the other semifinal at 8 p.m. The title game is set for Saturday at 8 p.m.; a third-place game will be contested Saturday at 5 p.m.
Amherst, whose nickname is the Lord Jeffs, punched its Final Four ticket Saturday by dismissing Babson 68-49. Babson (30-1) entered the game as the lone unbeaten team in Division III. The Lord Jeffs will be appearing in the Final Four for the third time in as many years. Last year, Amherst won its first 32 games before falling to eventual champion Washington University in overtime in the national semifinals. The following day, the Lord Jeffs defeated Rochester University in the consolation game to finish third in the nation.
This season, Amherst's lone loss came on Jan. 11, an 85-82 overtime setback at Kean. On Friday, CNU upended Kean 80-76 in the Elite Eight.
CNU led wire-to-wire Saturday, scoring the game's first 6 points and building their advantage to 18 in the first half. Lebanon Valley closed to within 2 points at 47-45 with 6:45 remaining, but a Schweers 3-pointer ignited a 9-0 CNU run that slammed the door on the Flying Dutchmen (Dutch women?).
Jessica Moore added 12 points and Barbara Davis 11 for the Lady Captains, who scored 26 of their points off Lebanon Valley turnovers.
