Liberty falls one point shy in Big South title game

It was a heartbreaker for Liberty (22-10), which lost by a point to Gardner-Webb in Sunday's Big South championship. Instead of an NCAA berth, the Lady Flames are likely WNIT bound.

Remember the triplets at Liberty? Well, Gardner-Webb has twins -- Monique and Dominique Hudson -- who carried the Runnin' Bulldogs to their first conference title with a combined 39 points in the 67-66 victory.

Avery Warley, on the all-tournament team along with Liberty's Jelena Antic, finished with 13 points, 16 rebounds and three assists, notching her 19th double-double of the year. For the tournament, the redshirt junior averaged 17.7 ppg and 16.0 rpg. Her 48 rebounds were the most by one player in a single Big South Championship, eclipsing the existing record of 42 boards by Campbell's Denise Ford in 1988.

Warley also broke Katie Feenstra's Liberty and Big South record for most rebounds in a single season. Feenstra pulled down 353 caroms in 2003-04, but Warley now has 357 to her credit this year.

This is the first trip to the tournament for Gardner-Webb (23-10).

Former Lady Monarch Sierra Little is no longer on the Bulldogs' roster.
