Debbie Ryan resigns as coach of Virginia

After 34 years, Debbie Ryan is no more at Virginia. The Cavaliers coach resigned Saturday morning.

Virginia athletic director Craig Littlepage made the announcement. Ryan's teams compiled an overall record of 736-323 and participated in the NCAA tournament 24 times. The Cavaliers made three consecutive Final Four appearances from 1990-92.

This is a job we figure that Dawn Staley once had a lock on, though now we think Temple's Tonya Cardoza is in the mix. But the name we can't help but come back to: Kenny Brooks, whose Dukes are the best team in the state with back-to-back wins over Virginia the last two years. JMU meets VCU in Saturday's CAA semifinals at The Showplace. Tipoff is at noon.

  1. Like I said to others, I want UVa to pick the best of the best -- let's gun for Kim Mulkey, Geno Auriemma & Nikki Caldwell.

  2. That's one heck of a list. But no question Virginia has a great job to offer.
